1.) Project Coordinator - CIP

Ref: IITA-HR-NRS2020-026

Overview

  • The project aims to support Irish potato seed system in Nigeria by building local capacity of the public and private sector to supply adequate amounts of quality seed, while supporting smallholder farmers in maximizing their investments in seed through building capacity in on-farm seed quality management, good agricultural practices for improving soil health and fertility, and storage.





Duties
Project management:

  • Learn the project proposal to fully understand and internalize the entire project mission and be ready to contribute as an important member of the team towards meeting the set goals at scale in an effective, sustainable and cost-effective manner.
  • Develop and maintain plans to support the project including analyses of task, schedules and resources needed’.
  • Under the guidance of your supervisors develop a detailed work plan for yourself and diligently implement it to achieve the set goals and targets by identifying, enrolling, handholding and monitoring suitable project partners for various activities in the potato value chain.
  • Liaise with the supervisor to ensure that activities are completed on time within budget and meet quality standard which will include developing and implementing plans for monitoring project progress as well as scheduling project meetings.
  • Oversee day-to-day management and implementation of the project activities in close collaboration with Green innovation centers for the agriculture and food sector (GIAE) teams and project partners.
  • Facilitate the implementation of project activities in the project area and participate in the monitoring of progress made towards achieving project set goals and outputs.
  • Provide support to public and private sector partners and ensure that they are fully and actively engaged.
  • Establish good linkages with CIP and IITA Nigeria to ensure that administrative support is provided for fiduciary services such as procurement and financial management.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationship with government extension service, research stations, NGO partners, and farmer groups.
  • In close consultation and collaboration with the Green innovation centers for the agriculture and food sector (GIAE) teams ensure that capacity is developed in all needed areas for various stakeholders within the potato value chain.
  • Ensure that quarterly and annual consolidated technical and financial project reports are prepared and submitted to the program management office on schedule.
  • Present the activities, results, impacts and outcomes of the project at professional, donor and other stakeholders’ meetings.
  • Document lessons learned and best practices on the project development, implementation, and oversight activities.
  • Proactively take responsibility to ensure safety of humans and property at all times and implement the project activities in timely manner in keeping with the budgets allocated.
  • Be entrepreneurial and proactive in identifying new opportunities, partners and strategies towards enhancing the overall project deliverables towards meeting the organizational and donor expectations.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor to meet the objectives of the value chain.
  • Apart from working towards achieving this project goals, be an ambassador for CIP and strive to position CIP as a GoTo partner for GIZ, other donors and for the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) partners in all things related to potato.

Technical Competencies:

  • Capacity building of public and private partners on early generation seed potato production to field multiplication and bulking using rapid multiplication technologies such as aeroponics, sand hydroponics and apical rooted cuttings.
  • Demonstration and training of potato on-farm seed management, soil fertility and other key agronomic practices and innovations.
  • Field bulking, testing, and identification of candidate CIP late-blight resistant varieties for Nigerian national registration.
  • Providing technical assistance to the national program, when requested and within the limits of available resources, in disease detection for seed certification schemes, in tissue culture for early generation seed production.
  • Development and advocacy for locally adapted protocols and schemes for seed quality assurance to the federal and state level agency.
  • Design and implement wide-scale farmer extension materials, briefs, scripts for cartoons and videos, including through innovative use of ICTs platform.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Country Team Leader or senior members of the organizations.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Agriculture or Agricultural related discipline with minimum of ten (10) years’ related experience in a project coordination, implementation and management and six years (6) of practical experience on Irish potato seed system, good agricultural practices, seed storage, potato pest and disease are must.

2.) Journalist

Backgound
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is implementing the TAAT Livestock Compact financed through a grant from the African Development Bank towards the cost of the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Program and intends to apply part of the proceeds for this grant to facilitate payment for a Short-Term Individual Journalist to capture case stories and pictures, where TAAT Livestock Compact High-Quality Cassava Peels (HQCP) machines have been installed in Ofu LGA of Kogi State and Atiba, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, both in Nigeria.

Job Descriptions

  • The Journalist is expected to find out about the evolution of the cooperatives / groups in those locations by asking and documenting responses to questions like; how did the cooperatives begin? What is the composition of members, number, sex, gender, and their roles? Do they have affiliations with any other associations in the state or nationally? What were their motivation and objectives for starting? What kinds of machines did they have before Synergos / TAAT intervention? What are their main products?. How many tons of Cassava do they process each day/week? Is there seasonal variation in their production? What preparations or input did they need to make to receive TAAT support? Have they received help from any other Organisation?, if so what form have these taken – cash, grant, training, or machines.? Etc.
  • The Journalist will also find out about the operation of the machines by asking and documenting responses to questions like who are the machine operators? How many persons in this cooperative have been trained to operate the machine? Have they trained any other individuals or cooperatives on the use of the machine? How many hours on average per day are the machines working? What quantity (tons) of Cassava peels are they processing per day/week? What quantity of HQCP mash (tons / kg) are they producing per day / week? How much extra income have they realized per production cycle? Does the income belong to the cooperative or to individuals? What is their source of water? How do they dispose of the wastewater from processing the HQCP? What specific benefits has the donation of the HQCP machines has on their lives and income? Who are the buyers or markets for the HQCP mash? What specific challenges have they faced in using the machine and so on.
  • The assignment will also require interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with members of the cooperative; 2 or 3 women / men cooperative members (include at least one woman among those to be interviewed to get a personal angle of the story; other Stakeholders e.g. Synergos, TAAT Compact, ILRI.
  • The journalist will also visit the household of the selected man / woman interviewed to be able to capture some important family size, source of income, importance of HQCP machine etc. insights.
  • General assessment of the HQCP production environment will be required. This assessment will show for instance, is this group the only one producing cassava products in the area? If not, who are the other processors within 30-50 Km radius of this cooperative? etc

Job Requirements

  • The desired candidate, who must be based in Nigeria, should possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a closely related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience in in the areas of the assignment.
  • The desired candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills in English language with a good working knowledge of the local languages in the two locations, demonstrated ability to conduct interviews, write, publish success stories, and take feature pictures.

3.) Phlebotomist

Duties

  • Collect biological samples from respondents inappropriate sample collection tubes.
  • Identify and confirm respondents properly using the unique ID.
  • Label collected samples with unique ID and date.
  • Use the best method for drawing blood depending on the respondent.
  • Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with respondents.

4.) Dietary Intake Interviewer

Duties

  • Obtain verbal or written consent before each survey component is started.
  • Familiarize himself/herself with the food and recipe listings in advance for the i24-hr recall.
  • Study the SOPs and questionnaire, follow the guidelines and instructions strictly to collect quality data.
  • Follow the interview instructions from the training and those embedded within the tablet to obtain high data quality.
  • Conduct pre-training of respondents.
  • Collect survey data by completing the 24-hr recall as described during the training using the tablet provided and in the right order.
  • Synchronize data collected regularly by connecting to the dashboard through the internet.
  • Maintain good quality data collection as much as possible by diligent work, strictly following standard procedures in conducting the interviews and recording answers, and by professional conduct.
  • Report each day’s activity and challenges to the supervisor

Qualifications

  • HND / BSc in Nutrition, Food Science / Technology, Community Development or Public Health. An employee of State or Federal Government with above qualifications can also apply.

5.) Laboratorian

  • Set up and sanitize workspace.
  • Assist in the taking of anthropometry measurements.
  • Process collected samples including centrifugation and aliquoting samples.

  • Good knowledge of parasite identification and proficiency in microscopy.
  • Pack and transport biological samples to a temporary storage facility.
  • Record all data and results in specified forms (paper or electronic) with accuracy.

6.) Field Supervisor

Duties

  • Ensure adherence to quality control procedures on day to day survey results.
  • Check on completeness, logic, and skip pattern on questionnaires.
  • Check on safe and adequate collection of biological samples, cold chain, and sample processing daily.
  • Make sure equipment and labels are appropriately used.
  • Work with local guides to identify respondents.
  • Prepare for fieldwork as well as provide the teams with all required survey materials.
  • Coordinate day to day activities and oversee the work performance of the team members.
  • Address all interviewers’ concerns as they arise.
  • Conduct step down trainings where necessary.
  • S/he must be able to address medical emergencies, and risk associated with blood collection.
  • Control data quality by checking for errors during interviewing and measurements daily and after the interview every week.
  • Monitor the use of field equipment, ensuring that they are kept in good working order and that problems are reported promptly and provide replacement materials.
  • Monitor team progress and support in addressing/escalating challenges as necessary.
  • Investigate high levels of non-responsiveness among interview teams.
  • Keep the interview teams on schedule.
  • Report to the zonal coordinator within his/her assigned geopolitical zone.

Qualifications

  • Master's in Health Sciences, Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science / Technology, Human Nutrition, or Nursing. An employee of state or federal government with above qualifications can also apply. Previous survey experience (e.g.: NDHS, MICS, SMART, NAIIS, etc.) as team lead is preferred.

8.) Lead Anthropometrist

  • Explain clearly the anthropometry procedures and measurements to be taken, the role of the caretaker and what is expected of the caretaker and child(ren).

  • Maintain and calibrate the equipment and report any issues immediately to the field supervisor.

9.) Head of IT and Data Management

Details

  • The Head of IT and Data Management will be responsible for coordinating, planning, and leading IT and Data Management in IITA. The candidate will have to lead and coordinate the Business Information Systems, Infrastructure and Telecoms, and Data Management teams, all led by experienced managers.
  • (S)he is also expected to represent IITA on ‘One CGIAR’ IT platforms and work in close collaboration with CGIAR IT colleagues to implement shared IT services to the benefit of IITA, our research, and services.
  • We are thus looking for a highly technical skilled, experienced, flexible, and motivated leader, a people person with excellent interpersonal skills, who can bring our IT and Data Management to international standards, and to provide excellent services for our users.
  • The Head of IT and Data Management reports to the Deputy Director General for Corporate Services.

Position Responsibilities
The Head of IT and Data Management will:

  • Lead and coordinate the overall information technology (IT) infrastructure of IITA.
  • On the software: provide guidance, fine-tuning, integration, stabilizing of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERPs) and other applications.
  • On the hardware infrastructure: lead final stages of disaster recovery, standardization of regional hubs and stations as well as provide general strategic oversight.
  • On Data Management: lead institutionalization of this function and bring this up/maintain to CGIAR standards. This includes working with research projects, knowledge management/communication teams, and other institutional leaders on sustaining the Big Data initiatives of CGIAR.
  • Liaise as relevant with technology service providers.
  • Take part in the CGIAR ICT Community of Practice to leverage collaborative IT services and infrastructure across the System and introduce shared IT services to IITA.
  • Act as the principal administrator and ensure the maintenance of the Organization’s information technology systems, including: ERPs; custom applications; software installations; license management; server set up and management; database administration; network, printers, audio/video conferencing and mobile phone support; deployment of equipment; management of inventories; disaster recovery; general computer support and periodic security vulnerability assessments.
  • Manage and lead the IT and Data management teams, including management of staff, communicating job expectations, and appraising staff performance, to provide a conducive work environment, ensuring efficient and proactive support across the Institute.
  • Coordinate user training/capacity building on business applications and use of systems for both IT staff and users across the institute.
  • Develop and update IT policies, processes and procedures, and ensure they are properly documented. Special attention should be given to Cyber Security safety guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Undertake such other job-related duties as may be requested by the Supervisor.

Educational Qualifications

  • The candidate should have a minimum of MSc or equivalent degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.





Core Competencies:

  • Relevant work experience of at least 10 years, in an international, multicultural organization or company.
  • Expertise in at least two of the three team areas.
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer systems, security, network and systems administration, databases and data storage systems, data management, and phone systems.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Firm grasp on IT infrastructure and operations best practices.
  • Understanding and knowledge of risk culture in IT systems and cyber security.
  • Strong technical skills, preferably on the software side, and knowledge of Oracle (financials, supply chain, project management and M&E) and/or Dynamics (payroll and HR) ERPs will be an advantage.
  • Good working experience of agricultural ontology, knowledge of application development lifecycle, and experience in open access and open data along with FAIR data concept, would be an advantage.

  • Strong problem solving and project management skills.
  • Fluency in English; working knowledge of French would be an advantage.

General information
The contract will be for an initial period of three years. IITA offers an internationally competitive remuneration package paid in US Dollars.
