1.) Associate Scientist, Agricultural Markets Economist
Ref: DDG-R4D/AS/AME/06/21
Location: Ibadan, Oyo
Recruitment Type: The Initial appointment is for three (3) years
Background
- IITA seeks to recruit an Associate Scientist, Agricultural Markets Economist.
- The overall objective of the position is to lead strategic and applied research on market economics on IITA mandate crops and related activities.
- The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other social scientists and biophysical scientists as needed, such as agronomists, crop breeders, soil scientists, and IPM scientists.
- He/She will be a member of the IITA Social Science and Agri business Core Competency.
He/She will report to the Senior Agricultural Economist and Director of Western Africa Hub.

Position Responsibilities
- Conduct market economic studies of commodities along the value chain.
- Monitor economic changes in agriculture in relation to the markets and vice versa.
- Devise methods and procedures to conduct different types of market surveys and value chain aassessments.
- Create, as well as use various econometric modeling techniques to develop forecasts.
- Apply models of economic behavior to agricultural markets changes and developments.
- Promote market development using experimental economic methods.
- Develop business plans for project and activities in commodity value chains.
- Establish and foster relationships and linkages with partners in national agricultural research and extension systems, the private sector,and Advanced Research Institutes.
- Provide technical backstopping and assistance in building the capacity of national programsin research on market economics.
- Mentor and backstop graduate students involved in related research.
- Publish scientific outputs in peerreviewed IF journals and others (e.g.,technical reports, IITA bulletins, or social media and books or book chapters).
- Contributionte to resource mobilization through the development of concept notes and proposalsin collaboration with others.
- Perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Education Qualifications
- The candidate should possess a Ph.D.in Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics, or other relevant fields from a highly recognized university.
- He/she will demonstrate experience of at least three (3) years in markets economic studies relating to agricultural issues, preferably in Africa.
Core Competencies:
- Good knowledge of market studies.
- Competence in the development of socio-economic andmarket surveys.
- Ability to perform a thoughtful, critical analysis of market economics-related data.
- Conversant with tools and approaches applied in market studies.
- Knowledge and experience with economic evaluation of agricultural technologies.
- Familiarity with statistical software used in market studies.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publicationsin market-related journals.
- Experience with resource mobilization.
- Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment.
- Excellent lleadership, mentoring, management, interpersonal,and team-building skills.
- Fluency in oral and written English.
- Working knowledge of French is an advantage.
- Knowledge of sub-Saharan Africa is an added advantage.

2.) Project Coordinator
Ref: IITA-HR-NRS2020-0017
Location: Ibadan, Oyo
Recruitment Type: National (3-year renewable contract)
Duties
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
- Coordinate and supervise IMAGE in-country operation on household surveys and plant sample collections for DNA analysis.
- Ensure project SOPs are followed and report discrepancies as part of the continuous improvement process. Participation in development of project SOPs is expected.
- Serve as one of the focal persons for IMAGE project in Nigeria, Tanzania and
- Ethiopia and maintain frequent communication with project leadership team.
- Support IMAGE project in organizing training workshops for household surveys and eventually lead the effort within respective countries.
- Manage in-country operational budget and provide financial and progress reports to project leadership and donor (BMGF).
- Liaise with local government partners, national research institutions and CGIAR centers from time to time to ensure smooth operation of the project and new technologies or solutions can be applied and scaled appropriately.
- Actively contribute as a member of the IMAGE project network to streamline and optimize household surveys. This may include knowledge sharing and supporting project members when necessary.
- Identify challenges and opportunities in in-country operation and provide leadership as part of local capacity development effort.
- Perform any other job-related task as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Master’s in plant Breeding, Molecular Biology or Agriculture or related field with minimum of five (5) years experience in a well-structured environment or donor funded organization.
Competencies:
The ideal candidate must have:
- Strong understanding of local culture and work environments, particularly in the context of rural development and smallholder farmer practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English is a must and local dialect(s) is a plus.
- Service oriented mindset and strong problem-solving skills.
- Seed industry/private sector experience is desired.
- Project management experience and ability to work under strict deadlines and budget requirements.
- Logistic management experience in agriculture research.
- Experience in multi stakeholder engagements and demonstrated ability to collaborate to achieve common goals.
- Ability to work independently with minor supervision and a career driven mindset.
- Ability to travel locally with occasional international travels.

Duties
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
- Support day-to-day administrative duties.
- Provide logistical support for all trainings, seminars and workshops.
- Keep inventory of office equipment, supplies and update asset register as required.
- Prepare requests for internal purchases and Purchase Orders of office stationery, machineries,assist in following up and handling of purchases/oracle requests.
- Assist in basic financial record posting and verification on the budget.
- Coordinate and implement office procedures for smooth-running and effective office function.
- Maintain an effective filing system and safe keeping of confidential documents.
- Arrange appointments and meetings.
- Arrange travels and book hotel accommodation for Activity staff and consultants.
- Retrieve information, data and documents as required.
- Prepare administrative and financial reports.
