Stakeholder Democracy Network is an International non-governmental organization that helps facilitate community development from a rights-based perspective. SDN operates in the Niger Delta where it helps the communities affected by oil exploitation and the challenges of resource curse.  SDN has five pillar issues that represent significant long held grievances and acute problems that we are trying to resolve. These are: Access to Energy, Democratisation, Environment, Resilient Communities, and Resource Governance.

1.) Communication Officer

Job Title: Communication Officer

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: Programme Manager

The Role

  • The Communication Officer will work closely with their counterpart in the UK Office to drive our communications strategy and deliver day-to-day communications work.
  • The ideal candidate should be a creative and innovative thinker capable of identifying and developing compelling visuals and stories that can appeal to the minds and hearts of our target audiences.
  • They should be able to capture stunning and professional photographs and videos, as well as excellent storytelling and copy-editing skills. The ideal candidate should be able to multi-task and work across project teams simultaneously and seamlessly. This role will also require travel to remote field locations to develop stories and capture visuals for SDN’s communications materials.
  • This role will specifically require at least 3 - 4 years of relevant experience in managing and producing publications; copywriting and editing; producing and designing communications content; website and social media content; and contributing to the development and implementation of campaigns.
  • These are tasks which are crucial to keeping our basic communications functions running, so you’ll need a portfolio demonstrating proficiency inAdobe CC in particular Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, and website management via a WordPress CMS.

Job Purpose
The purpose of the role is to develop and manage SDN’s communications activities to maximise the influence of our work. The role has three main objectives:

  • To develop and manage SDN’s communications systems and processes.
  • To directly support the communications elements of SDN projects (e.g. events, publications and campaigns).
  • To build a strong external presence and awareness of SDN and its work.

Duties
Objective 1: To develop and manage SDN’s communications systems and processes:

  • Develop and manage systems and processes for communications activities and ensure these are followed (e.g. for the development of publications, and website updates).
  • Act as a brand guardian and champion, advising others to ensure all content and messaging is on-brand.
  • Maintain a document management system of communication materials.
  • Monitor the performance of SDN’s communications (e.g. via website analytics)
  • Support the development and implementation of the SDN communications strategy.

Objective 2: To directly support the communications elements of SDN projects (e.g. events, publications and campaigns):

  • Support and manage the development and delivery of project-level communications plans. This includes designing and producing website and social media content; managing publication development and dissemination; supporting the delivery of campaigns, events and other stakeholder engagements; and tracking communications expenses.
  • Write high-quality, compelling copy in a range of styles, primarily for social media, websites and press releases.
  • Work with external photographers, filmmakers and designers to commission and produce content including graphics and video.
  • Line/project manage, or coordinate, communications staff as necessary to ensure coordinated external communications, field support to projects, and efficient application of communications human resources.

Objective 3: To build a strong external presence and awareness of SDN and its work:

  • Develop and own all communications channels to ensure key audiences are being reached through email (e.g. mailing list), social media, the website, and other channels.
  • Design and produce content for social media, website, and email channels.
  • Support the management of media requests and the development of a network of media contacts.

Other:

  • Represent SDN at external meetings and events as requested
  • To abide by SDN’s policies, including its Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy and Anti-Fraud and Corruption policy
  • Where relevant, line manage team members, and manage the work of consultants/external partners
  • Any other duties that are reasonably asked of you

Person Specification
The work we do here at SDN varies from day to day so we need someone dynamic and reliable, who can work under pressure and deliver efficiently and effectively. The successful candidate will have:

  • Candidates should possess a Master's Degree qualification.
  • 4+ years of communications experience working in a multi-channel communications role.
  • Experience in copywriting, editing, and proofreading.
  • Experience in professional photography and creating videos.
  • Experience in story-telling that targets different audiences.
  • Experience in coordinating and producing publications.
  • Experience in managing, developing and updating content for outlets such as websites and social media.
  • Experience in managing a WordPress website CMS, including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), site navigation, Gutenberg page structuring, and content updates with basic HTML knowledge.
  • Demonstrable competence in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.
  • Track record of communications project delivery, such as campaign planning and implementation and evaluation, and achieving key campaign objectives.
  • Ability to manage staff in a matrix-management structure and remotely, and/or experience managing/coordinating the work of others.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of people at all levels.
  • Flare for writing concise, compelling copy in plain English, according to a house Style Guide.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with Google Analytics 4, AdWords, and Search Console.
  • Competence in Adobe Premiere Pro/video editing.
  • A good eye for what makes a photograph effective, and technical knowledge of DSLRs.
  • Experience in creating specifications for colleagues embarking on content-gathering field trips.

Salary
N300,000 - N400,000 monthly

2.) Assistant Programme Manager

Job Title: Assistant Programme Manager

Summary

  • The Assistant Programme Manager role supports the Programme Manager in oversight of and high-quality delivery of SDN projects.
  • The role requires the individual to work closely with all project teams to ensure the completion and success of all projects and processes. The role will have a strong emphasis on building the capacity of the organisation in project implementation and the successful delivery of project outcomes and reporting.

Job Purpose

  • To ensure SDN achieves high-quality outcomes and progressive change in the Niger Delta, by ensuring SDN projects are managed and implemented to high standards.

This role has the key objectives:

  • To oversee the delivery of SDN projects to ensure they achieve their outcomes
  • To provide technical support to project teams and ensure the necessary skills, resources and processes are in place to deliver projects to a high standard
  • To represent SDN and build networks which enable it to further its programmatic work
  • To support the development of new projects and fundraising for these

Responsibilities
To oversee the delivery of SDN projects, and provide technical support to project teams, to ensure projects achieve their outcomes:

  • Oversee and support project start-up processes, including start-up workshops/meetings with the SDN team and partners, as relevant, and work with project managers to ensure all core project documentation (e.g., work plan, log frame, budget) is updated and developed before project implementation.
  • Monitor project progress across all projects, meet with all project managers every week and ensure SDN’s planning, project management and implementation, and monitoring, evaluation and learning processes are applied consistently across all projects. This includes ensuring core documentation (e.g., work plans, log frame, budget) is maintained, regularly reviewed and updated; supporting project managers with activity planning, delivery and coordination of project teams; ensuring reporting requirements and deadlines are met; and issues are escalated to senior management for decision-making, as necessary.
  • Ensure alignment of projects with SDN’s programmes strategy and ensure project implementation focuses on quality and the achievement of outcomes; identify risks, opportunities and other issues which may require adjustments to the project; support project managers to critically assess the progress of projects towards their intended outcomes, and whether project approaches remain relevant or may need adjustment.
  • Review internal and donor project reports, before submission to senior management for sign-off, and attend internal monthly progress review meetings with project managers for each project.
  • Review and input grant agreements/contracts before submission to senior management for sign-off.
  • If requested by senior management, assume the role of project manager for strategic projects

To provide technical support to project teams and ensure the necessary skills, resources and processes are in place to deliver projects to a high standard:

  • Line manage and coach Senior Project Officers to build their skills in project management
  • Monitor workloads and team member allocations across all projects and ensure projects are adequately staffed
  • With support from senior management, lead a bi-annual programme-wide review, to assess progress and share learning across SDN projects
  • Identify where lessons learnt and opportunities in one project can be applied in others, and work with project teams to implement this
  • Identify and recommend areas for improvements to SDN’s systems, processes and tools for planning and implementing projects, and periodically work with senior management to review these
  • Encourage cross-working and collaboration among project teams and ensure they work effectively with other parts of the organisation, including the finance team, research and policy function, and communications staff, and facilitate day-to-day interaction between these functions
  • Build and maintain a strong working knowledge of the Niger Delta and SDN’s working areas, and work with SDN’s Research and Policy Officers to propose key areas for research, analysis, and knowledge building in the organisation

To represent SDN and build networks which enable it to further its programmatic work:

  • Manage donor relationships and ensure all donor compliance requirements are met, including donor reporting
  • Support project managers to develop strong working relationships with partners, manage their work, and ensure that project partnerships are conducted in the spirit of SDN’s partnership approach.
  • Build and maintain strong networks with civil society, government and the private sector, which enable SDN to further its work to promote stability and development in the Niger Delta
  • Represent SDN at external events, to donors and project partners, as necessary

To support the development of new projects and fundraising for these:

  • Support the Country Director’s fundraising strategy to ensure it fits with SDN’s vision and mission in the Niger Delta.
  • When nominated by senior management, lead the development of proposals for funding, including coordination of project development team and partners.
  • Identify opportunities to seek further funding for successful project initiatives.

Key Qualifications
Assessment of candidates will be based on proven experience and capacity with evidence of the following or equivalent experience as follows:

  • Postgraduate Degree in Ssocial Sciences or related field.
  • At least 6 years of experience in programme/project management in the development sector
  • Donor reporting experience.
  • Experience in managing teams delivering projects, a collaborative approach to team working and the ability to coach and build the skills of team members.
  • A proven track record of managing projects and/or project teams to deliver high-quality projects which have resulted in positive outcomes for their target beneficiaries.
  • Proven ability to negotiate multiple relationships with various stakeholders and local partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and program administration of grants; knowledge of major donor rules and regulations, and the ability to manage multi-donor funding.
  • Demonstrated planning (including budgeting) and proposal writing skills.
  • General knowledge of the political and socio-economic dynamics in the Niger Delta region is essential.
  • Excellent IT skills: word, excel and online communication skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to constructively engage with a wide range of stakeholders, from vulnerable groups to senior government officials.
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, as well as the ability to build and conduct effective professional working relationships at all levels, both internally and externally.

Salary Range
N350,000 - N450,000 monthly.

3.) Project Officer - Economic Diversification

Job Purpose

  • To support the development and implementation of SDN projects and activities in its Environment and Resource Governance pillars.
  • This role will require the individual to take full responsibility for the completion and success of projects and ensure project adherence to the PMEL process.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Strategy and Programme Development 20%
  • Programme Implementation 60%
  • External Relations and Communications 10%
  • Fundraising 10%

Duties
Strategy and Programme Development:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of SDN’s mission and vision in the Niger Delta
  • Assist with regular analysis of environmental issues in the Niger Delta
  • Contribute to developing and deepening SDN’s understanding of its focus areas and methods
  • Contribute to internal and external discussions on environmental issues, legislative and regulatory frameworks in the oil and gas sector

Programme Implementation:

  • Contribute to the process of planning, development and implementation of environmental projects
  • Support the development and implementation of research and data collection processes
  • Support the analysis, review and final output process for all project reporting
  • Assist in organising and facilitating dialogue meetings, workshops and seminars with government representatives, civil society and other relevant project stakeholders
  • Deliver insightful project communications that feed the SDN external communications process
  • Take full ownership and responsibility for one of SDN’s functional pillars on Environmental rights

External Relations and Communications:

  • Identify, build and leverage relationships that are key to promoting stability and development in the Niger Delta
  • Hold regular communication and networking with local partners, local and national institutions and external actors
  • Contribute to developing appropriate strategies for advocacy with key SDN partners
  • Contribute to the SDN external communications process by writing articles for the website and email distribution
  • Design and implement project communications plans that feed the SDN external communications process

Fundraising:

  • Identify and develop sources of funding that will complement SDN’s strategy and projects within the Niger Delta
  • Lead the funding application process from the initial development of concepts notes to full application submission

Qualifications
Assessment of candidates will be based on proven experience and capacity with evidence of the following or equivalent experience as follows:

  • Postgraduate Degree in Development Economics, Business Administration, Sustainable Livelihoods or any other related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in managing and implementing livelihood projects in the Niger Delta.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English - Written articles/examples of your writing ability about economic issues in Nigeria.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key legislation and regulatory frameworks that the national and local economies
  • IT skills: word, excel and online communication skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Proven experience supporting and managing project staff.
  • Donor reporting experience
  • Proven ability to negotiate multiple relationships with various stakeholders including local communities
