1.) Head of Finance and Accounting

The Opportunity

  • The head of finance and accounting will be the primary business partner for the Country Head, Providing Financial leadership and stewardship for all Finance and Accounting operations within the country.
  • The role is responsible for financial management of all programs undertaken within the country.
  • This role provides direction to local finance and accounting teams to effectively manage the foundation’s financial matters, building the accounting, finance, and operations infrastructure in Country as part of a multi-year growth strategy.

Ways You Can Contribute

  • Responsible for the management of the full cycle of Finance program partner contracts, i.e., Expression of Interest (EOI), proposal, contract approval, conduct due diligence, budget reviews, program execution and monitoring, financial reviews, and program completion for all programs within country scope.
  • Guide and train external program partners on all financial aspects of contract execution, including budgeting and reporting, due diligence, financial controls, and Canadian regulatory requirements.
  • Provide financial expertise and advice internally to the Foundation’s Programs team on the development and implementation of comprehensive programming strategies.
  • Provide ad-hoc data and support for learning and evaluation activities, including analysis of program outputs and value-for-money.
  • Maintain accurate and timely financial documentation and data, and report on contract commitments, disbursements, spend and cash flow projections.
  • Ensure the managements grants systems and project financial trackers are updated in a timely & Accurate manner with the correct financial information for each program.
  • Ongoing monitoring & reporting on program financial performance post kick off (Deliver phase) to ensure foundation resources are deployed as envisaged and there are sufficient funding & financials controls in place to support the delivery of expected program outcomes as well as ensuring compliance to the CRA requirements on Books and records.
  • Ensure there are adequate business controls with the programs to ensure the safeguarding of the foundation’s assets.
  • Accountable for compliance with local and international financial regulations and requirements, e.g., Canada Revenue Agency standards, anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism laws, etc. within programs.
  • Provide periodic reporting on partner finance matters as determined by the partner contracts and ensure follow up actions’ items are closed as required.
  • Troubleshooting and management of financial issues that arise during program implementation.
  • Coordinate the close-out of partnerships after the end of the contract period.
  • Perform & review due diligence procedures on partners & sub-contractors (i.e., evaluating financial statements, tax returns, financial capacity, watchlist screening) to safeguard the foundation against financial and operational risks as well as ensure alignment to CRA requirements.
  • Assess alignment with charity law (i.e., private benefit and charitable purpose rules) in coordination with the Legal & Compliance teams.
  • Lead comprehensive program assessment processes ensuring quality control of the plans (Accountable for the quality of the Due diligence assessment).
  • Lead the assessment of the organization capacity together with the program finance teams especially as relate to the financials capacity of potential partners.
  • Drive annual due diligence review process and updating yearly workplans with Programs teams and partners.
  • Ensure programs comply with Canadian regulatory requirements (e.g., charitable purposes and private benefit), and international financial regulations (e.g., anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism laws etc.), escalating to Legal and Compliance team as required.
  • Lead the risk assessment of a programs together with the program finance teams within the various foundation frameworks to ensure the risks are correctly identified and risk mitigations are put in place and monitored to safeguard the foundation.
  • Ensure that the partners have the right information to support decision making including but not limited to: Cash Forecasts, envelop disbursements and commitment outlook, Programmatic actual spend analysis.
  • Play an advisory role in provision of information that enables the programs teams to make effective decisions.
  • Provide monthly financial reporting and analysis to Head of Finance & Accounting, Region, Program leads and to the Country Head of Programs on program expenses, partner disbursements, cash flow projections, value for money, and other ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Report status updates to Head F&A Africa/Region and providing ad-hoc support
  • Participate in the budgeting, planning & forecasting cycles of the foundation through the provision of financial information as maybe required.
  • Responsible for ensuring the appropriate internal controls and financial procedures & policies within the Country are implemented and operating as intended together with the accounting teams & Regional Head.
  • Ensure that the Purchase to Pay cycle within the country is implemented and operating as designed and act as the first point of contact/customer service to country teams as required for matters pertaining to accounting.
  • Provide support to the centralized accounting team in matters of tax accounting and ensure are appropriate processes are in place to ensure compliance to tax regulations together with the Foundation’s centralized accounting function.
  • Provide support to the centralized accounting function for annual audits with independent auditors and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Embed a risk management culture within the Country as well as manage local insurance coverage and policies and other risk mitigation protocols are in place together with the Country Head.
  • Coordinate and manage implementation of operational activities within the Country/Country in partnership with The Head of Technology, Head of Security, Facilities & Travel, and other Operational functional heads to ensure smooth day-to-day operations on the ground.
  • Lead and Manage program Finance teams and their works within the country.
  • Coordinate with the Canada accounting team to assist tax and audit procedures (e.g., tax filings, year-end closing, annual audit.
  • Build, support and/or manage relationships with external parties such as vendors, banks, local tax authorities, payroll service providers and legal counsel.
  • Engaging and cultivating relationships with partners to ensure good governance and partner the programs teams to enable the achievement of the intended strategic objectives / outcomes of the program.

Who You Are

  • University degree in accounting or a related field. MBA an asset.
  • At least 13-15 years in progressively senior financial roles within large and/or global organizations, with at least 10 years in a management capacity (Previous Finance Leadership experience).
  • Experience sitting at the leadership table of a country or regional organization.
  • Experience interfacing and operating with senior executives in public, government, and private sectors.
  • Experience building capabilities and capacity of accounting and operations teams in high growth organizations.

The Opportunity

  • Reporting to the Chief People & Culture Officer; the Lead, People & Culture Projects & Planning will serve the Chief People & Culture Officer and People & Culture leadership team overall coordination, effectiveness and execution follow through of People & Culture strategic projects and initiatives.
  • The role coordinates the P&C strategic alignment, planning, coordination, performance (against strategic KPIs) monitoring, processes management and reporting.

  • Partner with the CPCO and P&C LT to support the development of P&C strategic plan.
  • Coordinate the P&C Leadership team to align, support and track the P&C overall Strategic plan in alignment with the approved foundation strategy P&C reporting required by Chief People and Culture Officer.

The Opportunity

  • Reporting to the Regional Head of Impact, Region (Eastern and Southern Africa or Western, Central and Northern Africa); the Impact Lead, Regional Program will be responsible for leading the Impact function at regional level, supporting the Regional impact Head in formulating strategic outcomes for regional initiatives.
  • The role leads the development of the Regional Impact Measurement Framework and its implementation.

    • Help translate and refine these intentional goals into Measurable Outcomes that will lead to Impacts at scale and aligned to regional strategies for creating work opportunities for young women and men.
    • Support the development of methods, tools, and techniques for measuring the Outcomes and corresponding Impact narratives.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a holistic, culturally relevant and spiritually rooted methodologies and instruments for assessments, measurement and research activities that enables the understanding of what impact means, and how these can be measured and narrated with youth-focused lenses.
  • Oversee external Impact Partner Organizations (IPOs) who will be engaged to support impact monitoring and verification activities that contribute to Impact Assessments at the program levels.
  • Ensure alignment with the Foundation’s strategic objectives, cross-cutting priorities, and policies, procedures, especially gender-equity and social inclusion considerations.
  • Play a leading role in the commissioning and management of quarterly impact monitoring studies/data and evidence, and their collation into annual Impact Reviews to inform Country Program adaptive management processes.
  • Contribute a strong evaluation and impact assessment perspective to impact measurement and the generation of impact insights and narratives that resonate with local/indigenous cultures and ways of knowing.
  • Facilitate participatory focused group and learning events with young women and men in collaboration with Youth Engagement staff, as well as culturally relevant vectors of knowledge and elders to generate insights that will foster adaptation and collaborative planning.
  • Provide support and facilitate program teams in the formulation of outcomes that are responsive to the transformation intents of program managers and implementers.
  • Attract and build a talented team/network of impact measurement specialists and evaluators to deepen reflections on new and emerging thinking on impact assessment
  • Develop tools and approaches for application to the requirements of the Young Africa Works Strategies. This includes bringing on board talented the next generation of innovative African evaluators and supporting their successful integration into country teams as well as effective succession planning.
  • Lead performance management to ensure delivery of goals.

Who You Are

  • A Post-graduate Degree and / or equivalent experience and training is an asset.
  • A knowledge of research methods, and in particular research approaches and skills related to gathering data and insights among indigenous communities, youth, and other vulnerable groups, using appropriate cultural lenses and perspectives
  • Ten (10) plus years' experience working with the private and non-profit sectors, particularly in a role relating to National and Regional institutions in the relevant region, as well state and non-state actors in the field of Evaluation, Reviews and Impact.
  • Strong public policy experience, especially working with regional institutions mandated to undertake planning, policy formulation and implementation
  • Working experience in research, evaluation and learning, with demonstrated technical expertise in qualitative research methods, tool design, validation and data analysis.
  • Experience at senior leadership and management, preferably leading a country.
  • Experience establishing institutions for accountability and learning.
  • Experience living and/or working in multiple countries in the region / culturally diversified community groups.
  • Experience navigating research protocols, review processes and management of big data with government and academic institutions.
  • Strong familiarity and experience leading the development of M&E policies, regionally; and supporting the implementation of same in regional contexts, including experience in building the capacity of both state and non-state actors to function efficiently in the evaluation sector.
  • Experience applying a range of tech-enabled tools for data collection, analysis, reporting, and communication.
  • Experience in participatory approaches and demonstrated commitment to gender inclusion and youth engagement.
  • Deep familiarity with national and regional mandated institutions responsible for collecting, collating, and analyzing data for the purpose of measuring and reporting on outcomes and impacts. Deep knowledge of local research and evaluation methods.

The Opportunity

  • Contribute insights to the Foundation’s thought leadership on digital skills development in Africa and identifying opportunities to share and deepen learnings internally and externally with the wider development community.
  • Manage current or future programs in the digital space as appropriate and collaborate with Country Program teams and other co-located teams to leverage synergies and opportunities to enhance Impact of Young Africa Works programs.
  • Represent the Foundation’s interest in programming governance activities such as investment committees, advisory committees, or other stakeholders to provide oversight or elevate and leverage learnings.
  • Work closely with implementation partners and beneficiaries to contribute towards systematic learning and reflection processes to enable for continuous adaptive management of the programs.
  • Guide implementation partners in identifying and overcoming barriers to effectiveness by sharing knowledge and learnings while offering insights.
  • Provide perspective and expertise on emerging issues and trends in the digital economy space relevant to the Young Africa Works strategy.
  • Consistently remain current with respect to developments in the digital economy space in Nigeria.
  • Supervise colleagues and/or direct reports (such as Digital Economy Partners) by providing timely coaching and support necessary for success and growth.

Who You Are

  • You have a Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in Education, Business, or a Technology-related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience working with the private and non-profit sectors, particularly in a role relating to digital technology and skills development in Africa.
  • Experience in a commercial function in at least one relevant digital technology industry focused on low-income customers – e.g., product management, strategy, design.
  • Familiarity with relevant technologies and sectors with potential for emerging markets - software solutions, app or platform providers, venture capital, incubators, digital financial services providers, e-government, data analytics, etc.
  • Experience working with the non-profit or public sectors, particularly in a role relating to digital technology.
  • Experience with entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of African social, economic, and political contexts.
  • Excellent project management skills, including multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Experience living and/or working in Africa.
  • Knowledge of digital inclusion policy is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
  • Fluency in English is required. Ability to speak any local language(s) in Nigeria is an asset.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to execute a range of job duties and changing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to articulate information to a variety of constituents across cultures.
  • You possess professional maturity, sensitivity with different cultures, and impeccable integrity that exemplify the Foundation’s values.
