1.) Accounts Payable (AP) Accountant (Lagos & Port Harcourt)

Role Purpose

  • At an unprecedented time of change globally, the British Council seeks an enthusiastic and professional Accountant to manage its accounts payable processes across operations in Nigeria.
  • The role is accountable for the operational management of British Council Nigeria’s Accounts Payable activities. Focusing on timely, accurate, complete payables management in line with internal organisational requirements and external regulatory standards, while acting as a trusted partner to the business delivery, operations, and support teams.
  • This role supports the Senior Financial Accountant with the end-to-end payables management process across the operation, including Management of vendor balances and vendor accounts, support financial services delivery in Abuja and Kano offices, management of all Accounts Payables controls in line with Period End closure (PEC), Financial Control and Compliance Framework (FCCF), and Year End closing process, etc.

Main Opportunities/Challenges for this Role

  • The role presents great opportunity for building a strong, efficient, effective, innovative and value driven purchases and payables management services for the British Council.

The role holder will:

  • Manage end to end Accounts Payables activities and processes in Nigeria while ensuring accuracy and completeness of vendor accounts and balances.
  • Act as one of the key finance business partners across operations in Nigeria.
  • Ensure compliance with key Accounts Payable controls in line with internal Period End Closure checklists, Quarterly Financial Control and Compliance Framework (FCCF) report, etc.
  • Management of payroll payment and related processes.
  • Management of fixed assets and inventory records.
  • Close engagement with procurement and other Business support function to drive innovation and improvement in the P2P processes and systems.
  • The finance function has gone through several change programmes, and the post holder will play a key role in sustainability and achieving desired results of the changes and improvement projects, especially those that are Accounts Payable related.
  • The organisation requires the financial function to have a level of commercial finance acumen as we expand our income generating activities, streamline our portfolio and target more partnership income. As a result, the role holder will also contribute in driving income target/performance.

Requirements
Essential:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Qualified accountant – ACA and ACCA – with a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in accounting and finance and similar role
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any field
  • Good knowledge and understanding of transaction taxes – e.g. VAT and WHT
  • Good and demonstrable knowledge of P2P and AP
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrates high level of understanding in all areas of the finance and accounting function.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail and data entry skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience of an ERP system

  • Experience working with the Big 4 audit firms
  • Master’s Degree
  • CGMA, CIMA, CITN, etc.
  • Practical exposure to SAP

2.) Accounts Receivable (AR) Accountant

Role Purpose

  • At an unprecedented time of change globally, the British Council seeks an enthusiastic and professional Accountant to manage its Order to Cash and Accounts Receivables processes across operations in Nigeria
  • The role is accountable for the operational management of British Council Nigeria’s Accounts Receivable activities. Focusing on timely, accurate, complete receivables management in line with internal organisational requirements and external regulatory standards, while acting as a trusted partner to the business delivery and operational support teams.
  • This role supports the Senior Financial Accountant with the end-to-end receivables management process across the operation, including contract and billing management process while supporting compliance with internal policies, credit management (including ADR and bad debt provision) activities, revenue recognition in line with British Council income manual and IFRS, management of all Accounts Receivable controls in line with Period End closure (PEC), Financial Control and Compliance Framework (FCCF), and Year End closing process, etc.

3.) Programme Manager (EU - ECOWAS Scholarship Programme)

Pay band: 7

Duration: Fixed Term Contract ending April 2024

Role Purpose

  • This role will work with Director Programmes, Director Higher Education, Skills and Enterprise and other members of the Higher Education, Skills and Enterprise team in Nigeria, scholarship  support and delivery teams in other West Africa locations and HQ to manage the recruitment, selection, placement of candidates on the EU- ECOWAS (European Union Economic Community of West African States) Scholarships programme.
  • The post holder will provide efficient management of the Scholarships programme at a cluster level, provide management support to country delivery teams across the 4 programme host locations and ensure effective planning and the delivery of key milestones as outlined in the programmes’ Description of Action (DOA).

Essential:

  • University Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of scholarship management / administration experience
  • At least 5 years programme management and delivery experience
  • Fluent level of spoken and written English – level B2
  • Proven experience organising and managing events in West Africa
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with external clients, partners and stakeholders

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering large scale contracts for donors / clients such as the European Union.

Role Specific Skills:

  • Working knowledge of the Higher Education sector, structure, systems and discourse
  • An understanding of Higher Education sector priorities across SSA.
  • A working knowledge and understanding of local and international scholarships models and delivery processes.

Role Purpose

  • This post will support the Programme Manager with administrative and financial management functions of the EU ECOWAS (European Union Economic Community of West African States) Scholarship Programme.
  • The role holder will support the coordination and delivery of the key elements and activities of the programme across all the countries where the scholarship is based.
  • Responsibilities will also include providing support to the Programme Manager on the recruitment, selection, placement and management of candidates and support to the delivery teams in programme host locations across West Africa and HQ.

Requirements
Essential:

  • University Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years programme management and delivery experience, at least one of which should be related to Higher Education programming
  • Fluent level of spoken and written English – level B2
  • Experience organising and managing events
  • Experience writing financial reports or internal and external reporting
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with external clients, partners and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in using financial management software SAP

Desirable:

  • Experience working on a donor funded contract e.g. World Bank, European Union etc.
  • Experience of working in the area of scholarships management/ administration
  • Accounting qualification
