🇦🇺 $140,000 in Funding: University of Sydney Postgraduate Research Scholarship 2025

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Engineering is excited to offer a prestigious postgraduate research scholarship for 2025. This scholarship is designed for a PhD student eager to develop embrittlement-tolerant alloys essential for safe hydrogen transmission and storage.

Backed by the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and part of a renowned Australian Research Council Linkage Project, this opportunity is a significant step toward engineering innovation.

Scholarship Highlights

  • Value: Up to $40,109 per annum (indexed annually) for up to 3.5 years.
  • Eligibility: Open to both domestic and international students.
  • Research Focus: Engineering research in embrittlement-tolerant alloys for hydrogen transmission.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Hold an unconditional offer of admission for a full-time PhD program at the University of Sydney.
  • Have a first-class honours degree or a master’s degree in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics.
  • Applications without an unconditional offer are accepted, but the scholarship will only be awarded upon confirmed admission.

Research Background: Advancing Hydrogen Infrastructure

With Australia’s commitment to a carbon-free economy by 2050, clean hydrogen fuel is pivotal in the nation’s energy transition. However, traditional steels face challenges due to their tendency to fracture when exposed to hydrogen.

This research aims to develop innovative steels capable of safely transporting hydrogen at high pressures. By examining the microstructural interactions between steel and hydrogen, the project will contribute to building a robust and secure hydrogen infrastructure—crucial for a sustainable hydrogen economy.
