Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is divided into two grant categories:

Grant (I) – For Applicants from Seven Designated Countries

This grant is available to medical doctors and researchers from:

• Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
• Applicants must hold an MD or PhD in medical or life sciences.
• The selection process is conducted through committees in the respective countries.

Grant (II) – Open to International Applicants Beyond the Seven Countries

This grant supports foreign medical doctors (MDs) and researchers (PhDs) from non-designated countries. Key requirements include:

• A Japan-based mentor doctor must initiate the application process.
• Applicants must not be residing in Japan at the time of application.
• Graduate students are not eligible.
• Income Restriction: Applicants must earn less than JPY 6,000,000 annually after April 1, 2026.
• Fellows cannot combine this grant with JSPS funding exceeding JPY 200,000 per month.

Fellowship Duration

The duration of the fellowship depends on the research or training requirements:

• Grant (I): 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.
• Grant (II):
  • Research: 6 to 24 months
  • Clinical Training: 3 to 12 months

The 2026 Takeda Science Foundation Fellowship application timeline is as follows:

• Application Opens: April 1, 2025
• Deadline: July 18, 2025 (applications must be received by this date)
