🇨🇦 Manitoba Canada Launches 2-Year Work Permit Extension – Here’s How to Qualify in 2025

In a major policy shift aimed at retaining skilled talent, the Manitoba government has introduced a new two-year, Manitoba-specific work permit extension. This initiative is set to benefit foreign workers looking to build a future in the province, especially those with expiring or recently expired work permits.

If you’re planning to live and work in Manitoba—and eventually apply for permanent residency—this policy could be your opportunity.

What the New Manitoba Work Permit Policy Means

Announced by Manitoba Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino, the policy took effect on April 22, 2025. It allows eligible foreign workers whose permits expired in 2024 or will expire in 2025 to apply for a two-year work permit extension under a special public policy.

According to Minister Marcelino, “By allowing eligible candidates to extend their work permits, we’re helping more Manitoba workers and families to continue building their lives here.”
This policy supports both immigrants and Manitoba’s growing economy.

Who Is Eligible for the Two-Year Work Permit?

You are eligible if:

  • You hold a valid work permit set to expire in 2025, or
  • You held a valid work permit as of May 7, 2024, and:
    • You have applied for a new work permit under section 200 of Canada’s immigration regulations, or
    • You’ve applied for restoration of temporary resident status under section 181 or 182, or
    • You were authorized to work under section 186(u) and have since applied for an extension.

2. Manitoba-Specific Conditions

You must also meet all the following criteria:

  • Have had an MPNP Expression of Interest (EOI) profile on or before January 15, 2025.
  • Live in Manitoba before January 15, 2025, and continue to reside there.
  • Be currently employed in the province and have an employer ready to issue a letter of employment.
  • Intend to permanently settle in Manitoba.

How to Apply for the Manitoba-Specific Work Permit

Starting April 22, 2025, eligible candidates can apply for a Support Letter through Manitoba’s official online portal.

Required Documents:

  • A Letter of Employment from your Manitoba-based employer
  • A copy of your current work permit, authorization to work, or proof of expired status and restoration application
  • A copy of your MPNP Expression of Interest (EOI) profile

Once approved, the Support Letter can be used to apply for a two-year Manitoba-specific work permit, which helps bridge the period before obtaining permanent residency.
