Family Empowerment Media (FEM) is an evidence-driven non-profit that enables informed contraceptive decisions through clear, compelling, and accurate radio-based communication. Enabling couples to access modern contraceptives is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent maternal deaths. It also provides a host of other benefits. Numerous studies have demonstrated that radio-based social and behavioural change campaigns can empower women and men to use effective contraceptive methods to avoid unintended pregnancies.

We are recruiting to fill the following positions below:

1.) Communications Manager
2.) Director of Development
3.) Director of Strategy

1.) Communications Manager

Job Title: Communications Manager

Location: Abuja (Remote)
Hours: Full time/Part time
Duration: Long term
Starting Date: 21st of April 2023

About the Role

  • We seek a skilled writer and strong generalist to support our communications and operations work.
  • We expect the Communications Manager to spend around 50% of their time on communications and 50% on operations.

Responsibilities
Communications - 50%:

  • Create communication materials for FEM, such as newsletters, one-pagers, blog posts, videos, and social media posts.
  • Copy-edit various written materials created by others, such as reports and blog posts.
  • Improve and update the website as needed.
  • Lead and support other communications-related tasks.

Operations - 50%:

  • Support FEM’s financial management, including assisting with budgeting and accounting tasks.
  • Support FEM’s Human Resources (HR), including assisting with team management tasks and payroll.
  • Help ensure FEM’s legal compliance by assisting with taxes and other regulatory matters for the countries in which FEM has operations (including Nigeria and the US).

Qualifications

  • We’re looking for a candidate with strong writing skills who can create engaging and informative content for the public. We are also looking for someone with strong generalist qualities.

Job Title: Director of Development

Location: Abuja (Remote)

About the Role

  • We seek a strategic thinker, dynamic manager, and skilled writer to lead our development and communication efforts. We expect the Director of Development to spend about 75% of their time on development and 25% on communication and additional generalist tasks.

Responsibilities
Lead FEM’s development efforts - 75%:

  • Develop and implement a short- and long-term fundraising strategy to meet FEM’s financial goals and make future scaling plans possible.
  • Write fundraising proposals and other written output for funders.
  • Build connections with past, current, and future funders; this includes participation in pitch calls and sending updates to funders.

Serve in a generalist capacity - 25%:

  • Create communication materials for FEM, such as newsletters, emails to stakeholders, one-pagers, blog posts, videos, and social media posts.
  • Copy-edit written materials created by others, such as reports and blog posts.
  • Lead and support other communication-related tasks.

  • Engaged entrepreneur: takes the initiative and actively seeks to improve how we currently run our organisation.
  • Constructive team player: enjoys working in a team, values feedback, and effectively collaborates with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Job Title: Director of Strategy

About the Role

  • We seek a detail-oriented and analytical thinker with strong writing skills to lead our business development and planning efforts. We expect the Director of Strategy to spend about 25% of their time on strategy and analytics and 75% on planning and grant writing.

Responsibilities
Take part in FEM’s strategic decision-making - 25%:

  • Take part in Director meetings, where core decisions about the organisation’s work are made.
  • Compare the impact potential of scaling to new regions and cause areas by using a range of analytical methods.

Manage FEM’s business development - 75%:

  • Oversee FEM’s funding application processes by researching potential funding sources, managing writers, and reviewing funding proposals.
  • Set realistic budgets and timelines for various impact opportunities and contact and work with stakeholders to map out risks and opportunities.

Qualifications

  • We’re looking for someone with strong analytical skills and the ability to create large-scale project plans and effectively communicate them.
  • The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director to develop concrete plans to achieve our objective of improving maternal and child health.
