1.) Water and Land Management Expert

 

Description

• The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as the Water and Land Management Expert. The Water and Land Management Expert is responsible for leading research for development actions on the conservation and management of water, soils and agrobiodiversity under nature positive agricultural systems. The incumbent is expected to use participatory tools and approaches to design and implement innovative land and water management research for agrifood system transformation at scale. Working with the project leadership as well as with other CGIAR colleagues and national and international partners, the Researcher will be part of a multi-national and multidisciplinary team.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

• Lead the development, testing, and implementation of nature-positive (nature+) agricultural water management solutions at various scales
• Support the setting up of multi-stakeholder platforms and mainstreaming of agricultural water management solutions
• Lead the design of metrics/indices/models to measure and monitor water productivity and performance of nature+ solutions
• Contribute to the co-design of integrated protocols/tools for the management of biodiversity, pests and diseases, marginal quality water and soil in specific context.
• Co-develop with relevant stakeholders and implement action plans with integrated nature+ protocols
• Support the development of inclusive guidelines for soil, water and biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilisation through youth engagement
• Co-generate a portfolio of practical, evidence-based incentives for community-based conservation action and governance
• Contribute to the development of a participatory toolbox for inclusive landscape management plans
• Co-develop, test and implement nature-positive solutions (NPS) for more effective conservation of interlinked Agrobiodiversity, Land, Water and Soils (AWS) systems
• Co-develop multilevel AWS conservation monitoring toolboxes and metrics
• Co-develop multilevel agrobiodiversity-water-soil conservation baselines and open-access decision-support platforms for conservation decision support
• Support the identification of best-bet conservation practices systematized and available for scaling
• Conduct systematic reviews as well as meta-analysis and synthesis reports. Prepare technical reports and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals

Qualification Required & Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

• A PhD degree in the field of water resource management, agriculture, climate science, landscape management or other disciplines relevant to water, land, and food systems transformation
• At least 3 years’ post PhD demonstrated research and field experience of agricultural systems, agricultural water management, soil and water conservation, and a good understanding of soil-plant-water relationship.
• An in-depth understanding of challenges and opportunities in low-income countries and emerging economies related to sustainable water, land and agricultural development in a changing climate

2.) Senior Researcher – Resource Recovery and Agri-food system Expert

 

Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as the Resource Recovery and Agri-food System Expert.

The Resource Recovery and Agri-food System Expert will lead key aspects of circular economy and water pollution research in IWMI contributing to three CGIAR initiatives:

• Nature-positive solutions for shifting agrifood systems to more resilient and sustainable pathways (Nature+). This initiative aims to re-imagine, co-create, and implement nature-positive solutions-based agrifood systems that equitably support food and livelihoods on the ground, while simultaneously ensuring that agriculture is a net positive contributor to nature. CGIAR researchers and partners will reshape food production systems in five countries, Burkina Faso, Colombia, India, Kenya, and Vietnam, to meet food demands of growing populations by stewarding biodiversity and improving soil and water management within integrated nature-positive solutions. IWMI is the co-lead of the initiative and contributes to soil, water, and circular economy solutions across four work packages (W1, W2, W3, and W4). The candidate will lead the deployment of circular bio-economy innovations (specifically agricultural wastes in the rural areas) for the transformation of food system under different climate scenarios in target countries, thereby promoting a healthier environment. The incumbent will lead IWMI’s work on converting waste to fertilizer as a climate and crisis adaptation strategy and in response to the demand by national governments in the light of the current global fertilizer scarcity.
• Transforming Agric-food System in West and Central Africa (TAFS- WCA), IWMI leads WP3 on inclusive landscape management as pathways for scaling land and water innovations for resilient agri-food systems. IWMI is expected to promote the proper use of land and water resources as a prerequisite to building a healthy, productive and One Health sensitive environment for resilient agri-food systems and livelihoods. The candidate will be responsible for leading the activity on deploying market-driven circular bio-economy innovations to reduce pressure on water and land resources. This activity will take place in 6 countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC.
• The candidate will further lead the deployment of a use case on organic fertilizer for scaling within the Initiatives on Excellence in Agronomy and Sustainable Intensification in Mixed Farming System (SI-MFS).
• In the Cities Initiative, IWMI and partners propose to strengthen food system resilience in urban environments, securing a future for productive, green, and livable cities with healthy populations. The Initiative will support a vibrant, largely informal urban and peri-urban (UPU) agri-food sector to help improve sustainability, equity and growth of opportunities, as well as mitigate risks for human and environmental health. In this context, the candidate will lead the conceptualization and implementation of innovation Hubs, Wto3F (RRR innovation hub with the components of waste to fertilizer, food, and fuel) in Ghana and Kenya

Duties AND Responsibilities:

• Creatively generate ideas on IWMI's research in the circular economy and water pollution and wastewater management space, specifically identifying opportunities for research in environment and agricultural (food systems) space in developing countries and delivering innovation including in both urban and rural contexts.
• Lead project development and implementation in liaison with IWMI colleagues and external partners, ensuring delivery of outputs to an international standard; this includes designing and supervising data collection and analysis from field research.

• Minimum of 7 years of experience in research on resource recovery and reuse, circularity and related agriculture studies including substantial experience in tackling environmental challenges related to waste/wastewater management.
• Experience in developing and leading research teams with multiple partners and covering multiple disciplines in developing countries and elsewhere.
• Previous work experience in developing country contexts (Asia and/or Africa), including data scarce (and sometimes remote) environments.
• Proven ability to bring in research funding.

3.) Senior Researcher – Hydrology and Water Resources Management

• The successful candidate will be familiar with the water resources management, agricultural water management, landscape-based approach hydrological processes and analysis, and thinking around the water-energy-food and eco-systems nexus. • Excellent knowledge of integrated hydrological analytical tools/models/metrics.
• Understanding of trade-offs across the water-energy-food-environment nexus and how these can be managed from field to basin scale
• Good understanding and experience in application of landscape-based approach for integrated land and water management
• Experience in engaging with regional and international professional networks and building strong partnerships with different categories of stakeholders.

4.) Regional Communications & Knowledge Management Coordinator

 

Description

• The Communications & Knowledge Management Expert will lead the development and delivery of a communication strategy required for achieving impact primarily for the IWMI Western Africa office, and especially for the regional integrated initiative. The Expert will provide communications and public relations support to the IWMI-WA Country Representative, Project Leaders and a team of researchers undertaking various research projects in the region.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The position holder will work closely with the Project Leader, Country Representative and Communication & Knowledge Management team to:

• Develop and implement communication and knowledge management action plans that include media outreach and social media content creation for research projects
• Conceptualize and develop digital, printed and multimedia communications materials including presentations, press releases, fliers, brochures, posters, web and social media campaigns, infographics, informational videos, and blogs based on insights research projects and according to donor requirements and IWMI branding guidelines
• Identify and filter key messages and recommendations from technical research reports and package for dissemination to different stakeholders.
• Develop news stories and opinion articles, cultivate relationships with journalists, coordinate interviews with researchers and organize media participation in field visits and key events.
• Perform writing, editing and, translating services to the research teams.
• Develop and maintain contacts with the media and establish a media outlet database for the project.

• The Expert will support multidisciplinary teams in the design and implementation of integrated socioecological and techno-institutional research towards the transformation of land, water and food systems in defined landscapes in West and Central Africa.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

• Conduct situation/landscape analyses to identify status of ecosystem services and natural resources within defined landscapes.
• Conduct systematic literature reviews and meta-analysis and develop a conceptual and analytical framework to guide the implementation (both research and engagements) of assigned project.

• The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as an Innovation hub coordinator to contribute to One CGIAR’s initiative – Resilient Cities through sustainable urban and peri-urban agri-food systems (Resilient Cities). The Coordinator will be responsible for the design, setting up and continuous operation of an innovation hub for resource recovery and reuse solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess options for resource recovery from waste streams including nutrients, water, energy, animal feed from a technical and economic perspective given specific local context.
• Lead and supervise the design, setting up and continuous operation of innovation hubs for different resource recovery and reuse models.
• Co-design and support implementation of resource recovery and reuse solutions for different settings.
• Work within multidisciplinary research teams to ensure delivery of high-quality outputs, which include designing of resource recovery and reuse solutions and assessing their technical and economic sustainability by collecting and analyzing data from field research.

• The position holder is required to provide administrative functions for the IWMI-West Africa Office under the direction of the Country Representative and in consultation with relevant departments at IWMI Head Quarters.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

Human resources functions

• Main point of contact for HQ HR department.
• Manage recruitment/selection, induction/settle-in process (in collaboration with HR) for all new staff, consultants and interns including related logistical support.
• Assist expatriate staff, interns/fellows in securing suitable accommodation and suitable rental contracts.

Administrative Functions

• Manage the IWMI-West Africa office; recommend and implement policies and processes, develop, maintain, and update administrative procedures, develop and maintain proper record/filing system, ensure effective customer interface for visitors,

• Implement COVID-19 protocols including assisting staff to prepare field trip risk assessment, review of health evaluation forms for staff and visitors to the office.

Logistics, Procurement, Facility Management

• Oversee the transport unit including the supervision of staff attached to the transport unit.
• Manage the transport requirements - scheduling drivers based on transport requests.
• Ensure the maintenance, servicing and repair of IWMI vehicles.
• Prepare accurate monthly statements from vehicle log sheet and submit same to the accountant after approval.
• Maintain Vehicle Registration File

Procurement

• Maintain a record of key suppliers
• Oversee the day-to-day delivery of procurement services in collaboration with the Finance Manager
• Handle all IWMI shipment and process tax clearance and VAT exceptions on all imported items for IWMI and hosted organizations.
• Prepare letters for the issuance of Foreign Ministry ID cards and resident permits for IWMI International Staff and International Staff of hosted organizations.
• Process visas for IWMI Staff/Staff of hosted organizations as well as official visitors.

Facility Management

• Responsible for managing the maintenance requirements of the IWMI Ghana office and infrastructure.

Qualification Required & Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• A postgraduate university degree in business administration, human resources or equivalent professional status awarded by a relevant professional institute.
• Minimum of 10 years of work experience, including at least 7 years of demonstrated experience in international research for development organization
• Good organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills, particularly when preparing correspondence and briefings.
• Demonstrated familiarity with social media and the ability to use such media to promote inter-office communications and information sharing.
• Prior experience in similar position with international organizations preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
• Conversant in MS office software packages.
• Experience in management or administration in similar International Organization
• Experience with handling protocols under diplomatic arrangement.
• Outstanding service approach and high level of interpersonal, communication and service management skills in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural organization.
• Very good personal organization and priority setting skills.
• Commitment to teamwork and strongly valuing the sharing of information and continuous improvement in a cooperative atmosphere.
• Well-developed administrative skills and good communication skills.
• Demonstrates effective skills in leading and managing people.
• Focus on high quality service.
• Good understanding on the application of relevant administrative policies and procedures.

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in Ghana will be considered. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package, inclusive of health insurance, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, and long-term disability coverage. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
