🇯🇵 Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships 2026 for Research Students – Fully Funded to Japan

Are you ready to take your postgraduate education to the next level? The Government of Japan, through its Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), is now accepting applications for the 2026 MEXT Scholarship for Research Students. This fully funded opportunity is open to international candidates — including those from countries like the Solomon Islands — to undertake graduate-level research in Japan.

This isn’t just a scholarship. It’s a gateway to Japan’s world-class education system, rich culture, and cutting-edge innovation.

What Is the MEXT Research Student Scholarship?

The MEXT Research Scholarship is intended for foreign students who wish to pursue Master’s or Doctoral degrees in Japan. Selected candidates may begin as non-regular (research) students and, based on performance and recommendations, can advance into full-degree programs.

Applicants must choose a field of study that relates to their prior academic background and falls within the scope of disciplines offered by Japanese universities. Note that some hands-on training fields — like clinical medical practices or traditional Japanese arts — are not eligible unless the applicant holds the required licenses.

Who Can Apply for the MEXT Scholarship 2026?

To be eligible for the MEXT Research Students 2026 program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a national of a country that has diplomatic ties with Japan (e.g., Solomon Islands).
  • Be born on or after April 2, 1991 (some exceptions may apply).
  • Possess the academic qualifications necessary for entry into a Master’s or Doctoral program in Japan.
  • Be physically and mentally fit to study abroad.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn Japanese and adapt to Japanese culture and life.
  • Be available to arrive in Japan either:
    • Between April 1 and April 7, 2026, or
    • Around September/October 2026, depending on the academic term.

Important Note: Dual citizens with Japanese nationality must renounce their Japanese citizenship before entering Japan.

Successful candidates will enjoy a fully funded academic experience in Japan. Here’s what’s included:

  • Monthly stipend:
    • ¥143,000 for non-regular students
