1.) Senior Planning Engineer – LT
2.) Senior Metallurgist
3.) Metallurgical Superintendent

 

AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

1.) Senior Planning Engineer – LT

 

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

• To give confidence in the Mining Plan by reviewing and interrogating existing data from the life of mine process and produce realistic designs that enable plans and schedules to be produced at the required standard for short-term planning and production systems.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
• Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
• Define mine planning activities and schedules for tracking of mining operational readiness tasks
• Generate a 12 month mine schedule with respect to geotechnically re-sequenced stopes to include diamond drilling activities
• Provide unequivocal Mine Planning data to enable the quarterly updates of the rolling 18-month plan to be produced on time.
• Develop quarterly, rolling forecast plans with sufficient details for implementation by the mining contractor
• Ensure mine quarterly forecast is aligned with annual budget to meet the general strategic intent; mine design, infrastructure specifications, diamond drilling requirements, production schedules, unit costs, identified risks and issues.
• Deliver the work of the Mine Planning function within approved budget targets and specified timeframes, costs and related KPIs
• Demonstrate Safety Leadership and improve the Culture across the Production Engineering department regarding Safety, Health, Environmental and Sustainable Development
Provide the resources and expertise to develop the team to capably and consistently deliver the annual budget, according to their role and level of authority
• Rigorously drive implementation of projects and nurture and sustain a culture of Accountability and Continuous Improvement within the Mine Planning team
• Develop and maintain constructive relationships with Internal Stakeholders (Corporate, Group Planning & Technical, sister mines, etc.) and external Stakeholders (Regulatory Agencies and Authorities, Minerals Commission) to establish existing and changing societal and regulatory expectations and requirements

Qualification Required & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
• A post Degree would be considered a strong asset

Experience

• A minimum of eight (8) years' proven experience in mine planning in an underground mining environment of which at least five (5) years at senior supervisory level within a planning/technical department
• Proficient with Mine Planning Software
• Knowledge of a variety of mining methods applicable to the site.
• Excellent Communication Skills

Legal Requirements

• Blasting certificate
• Mine Rescue certificate (preferred)
• Shift boss certificate (preferred)

Technical Competencies

• Understands key elements constituting site safety system.
• Can lead team-based risk assessments and conduct behavioural based observations.
• Active participant in ensuring critical controls are in place and working.
• Can actively take part in reviewing of safety system elements such as practices / procedures.
• Extensive experience and understanding of mining production process/practices.
• Understanding of good production practices, management, support systems, and how each should interact to deliver targeted performance.
• Ability to develop innovative technical ideas/practices with regards to different mining methods and their application.
• Extensive knowledge of Mining Methods and strengths and weaknesses of the methods and the applicable use.
• Demonstrate advance level of knowledge of planning systems and practices from long term to short term mine planning.
• Understands advanced principles of mine design including optimisation.
• Understands advanced principles of mine design and scheduling to achieve Business outcomes.
• Ability to generate and act as competent person for annual mine reserves statements.
• Understands the contract, the key deliverables, and the processes that are aligned to managing it successfully.
• Capable of having a direct role in managing an element of the contract management process.
• Can propose, draft, and analyse potential contract variations and amendments for approval by the contract manager

2.) Senior Metallurgist

 

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

The incumbent will design, develop, and manage the accounting features of the gold processing plant and ensure raw materials for processing are accurate for safe sustainable plant throughput and gold recovery at a minimum cost. He/she will act as a continuous improvement champion and facilitate projects that delivers and promotes a culture of sustainable continuous improvements within the department.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Lead by example to create a safe working environment, where risks are assessed and managed so tasks are performed without risk of injury or harm.
• Contribute to the Processing Department target to achieve zero reportable environmental incidents, zero compliance breaches and no events requiring public disclosure.
• Utilise ‘Analyse and Improve’ tools to investigate process interruptions so that exposure to environmental risks is reduced.
• Reduce energy usage by running the plant energy consumption per unit produced at the optimal rate with sphere of influence.
• Contribute to the Processing Department’s objective to eliminate hydrocarbon and hyper saline water spills to zero within the Metallurgy Department.
• Ensure the organization structure is capable of delivering the metallurgical efficiency strategy
• Develop and set-up process automation, control systems and on-stream Metallurgical Monitoring for accurate and consistent data.
• Develop first fill and operational regents and consumables procurement plan and track delivery.
• Identify and maintain required inventory of critical spares and consumables
• Conduct the drafting, review, adjudicating and managing of all service contracts of the processing plant.
• Develop BIOX bacteria inoculum build up program and facilitate its implementation.
• Provide input into the process team readiness, recruitment, training and development of standard operating procedures, policies, etc.
• Where practicable, identify manual sampling protocols for plant data
• Investigate operational bottlenecks in the plant and make recommendations to prevent recurrence.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, product quality, and reduce costs, as part of the Full Potential program.
• Model the process flowsheet and conduct integrative online mass balancing and simulation for troubleshooting and optimisation works
• Model the Sulphide Treatment Plant metallurgical accounting system with the modelling tools for steady state or dynamic plant model development for various applications

Qualification Required & Experience

• Recognized tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Mineral or Chemical Engineering
• Certificate of competence from MINCOM as per LI 2182 would be an advantage

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of post-tertiary practice on a recognized process plant

Technical Competencies

• Good computer skills especially with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point presentation skills
• Excellent analytical skills and ability to communicate thoughts and ideas
• Must have good sense of ownership, commitment and self-motivated to achieve set targets

3.) Metallurgical Superintendent

 

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

• The Metallurgical Superintendent is generally responsible for everything QA/QC that the department is involved with including data management, efficiencies, and researching into opportunities for the future.
• The incumbent with directives from the Plant Manager -Technical, should always be armed with sound reasons behind the good, the bad and the ugly of what is happening on the plant and give technical guidance to the operations team and as well be involved with setting up robust metallurgical data management system and inform plant management and any stakeholders with timely and meaningful technical reports in support of the department operations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Application of HSE regulations with zero tolerance for breaches.
• Lead by example to create a safe working environment, where risks are assessed and managed so tasks are performed without risk of injury or harm.
• Continuous improvement of design and field safety performance.
• Timely investigation of all injuries, illness, and incidents with action plans developed to prevent recurrences
• Contribute to the Metallurgy Department target to achieve zero reportable environmental incidents, zero compliance breaches and no events requiring public disclosure.
• Utilise ‘Analyse and Improve’ tools to investigate process interruptions so that exposure to environmental risks is reduced.
• Reduce energy usage by running the plant energy consumption per unit produced at the optimal rate with sphere of influence.
• Clearly define the roles and accountabilities of team members.
• Support the recruitment and appointment of people to role in as directed by and in consultation with process management
• Communicate policies and procedures in a manner so as to achieve full understanding and compliance

• Actively support the design and review of Process Automation, control systems and Metallurgical accounting.
• Conduct quality assurance on external Laboratory services providers.
• Assist in the drafting and review of all service contracts of the processing plant.
• Design Biox bacteria Inoculum builds up program and facilitate its implementation.
• Design and implement sampling regimes for data acquisition and reporting
• Manage process monitoring equipment, calibrations, and certifications
• Develop/Review and implement Standard operating Procedures for Metallurgical Operations.
• Drive and coordinate the sectional budget that supports the company’s objectives and strategy
• Ensure cost impacts in area of accountability are evaluated, approved and budget is revised
• Identify, communicate, and implement potential cost reduction initiatives
• Manage AFE’s for capital expenditure that will improve throughput, reduce cost or improve efficiencies.
• Develop the risk and risk mitigation plans and activities for all work scopes and changes relating to the processing plant operations and infrastructure.
• Develop a plan to ensure metallurgical equipment maintenance/ replacement is achieved in line with the Obuasi Operations expected life of mine.
• Ensure the SAP asset maintenance management system is fully utilized for maintenance activities and that all team members are competent in the utilization of the SAP.
• Develop and maintain the Metallurgical Management Plan, as a key Project Execution sub plan for the area of accountability
• Arrange input and support into establishing and maintaining Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), budget, schedule, and construction work packs for refurbishment activities.
• Oversee the Requests for Information (RFI) and Technical Query (TQ) process, review, and appropriate technical and non-technical documentation for approval.
• Drive the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI) recertification for Obuasi Mine.
• Maintain meeting records, agreed actions, and follow up to ensure actions are completed.
• Maintain a regular SAP asset maintenance management system operational readiness interface and hand over meeting.
• Participate in formal cost and schedule reviews to support accurate and timely reporting.
• Produce accurate and timely weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting that can clearly convey the status of safety, cost, schedule and quality for the construction, refurbishment, and operational works.
• Lead process quality assurance audits and drive corrective/improvement measures
• Inspect plant refurbishments and plant modifications to ensure works are delivered in accordance with applicable designs, specifications, and expectations
• Perform audits on metallurgical practices, correct and implement sustainable actions.
• Continuously identify and collate opportunities to improve cost, schedule, quality and safety outcomes to all engineering, production, refurbishment, and construction activities undertaken in accountability.
• Provide technical knowledge, “metallurgical” input into the development and execution of the commissioning plan.

Qualification Required & Experience

• Bachelors in Metallurgy, Mineral, Material or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.

Experience

• At least 8 - 10 years’ experience in a processing plant; preferably 5 - 8 years at a middle management role.
• Experience and understanding of total mining cycle.
• Proven experience in collaborating with plant operations maintenance department

Technical Competencies

• Plant performance and efficiency

• Knowledge in SCADA and process control.
• Budgeting and budget control including the understanding of interdepartmental costing
• Proven Metallurgical Accounting with implementation of databases
