UK Student Visa Update: Three African Countries No Longer Need to Submit Proof of Funds Upfront
International students planning to study in the United Kingdom should take note of an important visa update. The UK government has confirmed that applicants from Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia can now apply for a UK Student visa without submitting proof of their finances at the initial application stage.
While the change simplifies the application process for eligible students, it does not remove the financial requirements for studying in the UK. Applicants must still demonstrate they have sufficient funds if requested by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
Here’s what the latest policy means and how it could affect future applicants.
Which African Countries Benefit from the New Rule?
Under the UK’s differential evidence requirement, students from Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia are no longer required to upload financial documents when submitting their Student visa applications.
This policy places the three African nations alongside several other countries whose applicants benefit from a simplified documentation process.
The change is intended to make visa applications more straightforward for eligible students while allowing immigration authorities to carry out additional checks where necessary.
What Is the Differential Evidence Requirement?
The differential evidence requirement is a UK visa policy that reduces the number of supporting documents certain applicants need to provide during the initial application process.
For eligible students, this means financial documents are not required when first submitting their visa application.
However, applicants should not assume they are exempt from meeting the financial rules. UKVI retains the right to request evidence of available funds before making a final decision.
Anyone unable to provide satisfactory financial evidence if requested risks having their application refused.
Nigerian Students Are Not Included
Students from Nigeria are not covered by the differential evidence requirement.
This means Nigerian applicants should continue preparing all financial documentation required for a UK Student visa and ensure they can prove they meet the maintenance requirements before applying.
Applicants from other countries not included on the exemption list should also be prepared to submit financial evidence if requested during the visa process.
How Much Money Do UK Student Visa Applicants Need?
Students applying for a UK Student visa must normally demonstrate they have enough money to pay both their tuition fees and living expenses.
The amount required depends on where they will study.
Students studying in London must show they have £1,529 per month for living costs, for up to nine months.
Those studying outside London must demonstrate £1,171 per month for up to nine months.
This means applicants may need to show maintenance funds of up to:
- £13,761 for courses in London
- £10,539 for courses outside London
These figures apply to living expenses only and do not include tuition fees, which must also be covered according to the details stated on the student’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Why the Financial Requirement Still Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding this update is that eligible students no longer need to have sufficient money to study in the UK.
That is incorrect.
The policy only removes the requirement to submit financial documents at the beginning of the application. Applicants must still satisfy the UK’s maintenance requirements and should keep their financial records readily available throughout the application process.
If UKVI requests additional evidence, students must be able to provide acceptable documentation within the required timeframe.
Students Already Living in the UK May Also Qualify
The UK government also states that applicants who have legally lived in the UK for at least 12 months before submitting a Student visa application generally do not need to provide financial evidence.
This exemption applies regardless of nationality, provided the applicant meets the relevant immigration conditions.
A Reminder About the UK’s Updated Financial Rules
The latest announcement follows changes introduced to the UK’s student visa financial requirements that took effect in 2025.
Those revisions increased the amount international students must demonstrate for their living expenses—the first adjustment since 2020—to better reflect the rising cost of living across the UK.
As a result, prospective students should always check the latest financial thresholds before submitting their visa applications.
