🇺🇸 Call to Apply: Washington State University International Academic Award (USA)
International students are automatically considered for scholarships upon admission to WSU. You may also be eligible for a variety of other awards from the University.
High-achieving international students are guaranteed to receive the International Academic Award.
To be considered for additional WSU scholarships, apply for admission and scholarships by January 31.
Be sure to check the requirements and deadlines for all scholarships. Some scholarships have different deadlines and require supplementary materials.
You are welcome to apply for multiple scholarships.
The Office of International Programs automatically awards these scholarships to qualifying students who are offered admission.
Freshman awards (renewable for 3 additional years) are available to students who have less than 1 year of college credit.
Transfer awards (renewable for 2 additional years) are available to students who have earned at least 1 year (27 semester hours) of transferable college credit.
Level 1 | $4,000 per academic year tuition waiver | Offered to students with cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher |
Level 2 | $2,000 per academic year tuition waiver | Offered to students with cumulative GPA of 3.30 to 3.59 |
The International Academic Awards are automatically renewable for the lengths mentioned above if you meet the following renewal criteria for each academic year:
- Maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average by the end of spring semester
- Maintain 12 credits each semester, or complete 24 semester credits by the end of spring semester
- Maintain non-resident degree-seeking student status
International Year One Progression Award
$4,000/year tuition waiver
The Office of International Programs automatically awards this scholarship to qualifying students who complete their Undergraduate Bridge program with a 3.5 GPA and continue on to degree-seeking study at WSU.
This award is automatically renewable for up to 2 years if you meet the following renewal criteria for each academic year:
- Maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average by the end of spring semester
- Maintain 12 credits each semester, or complete 24 semester credits by the end of spring semester
- Maintain non-resident degree-seeking student status

International Merit Award
$2,000 tuition waiver
Eligibility
Offered to degree-seeking undergraduate students on F-1 visas currently attending the Pullman campus who meet at least 1 of the following criteria:
- Cumulative GPA of 3.60 or above
- Unusual service to the University or community
- Other extraordinary work or achievement
This award cannot be combined with other International Programs awards.
How to Apply
To apply, submit the following:
- The Office of International Programs Awards and Scholarship Application
- Personal letter describing your meritorious qualities (i.e., the criteria above)
- Letter of recommendation from an advisor, a professor, or an official program administrator
Deadlines:
- Fall semester: June 1
- Spring semester: December 1
Emergency Tuition Support Award
The Office of International Programs offers a 1-time, $1,500 tuition reduction emergency tuition support (amount is subject to change) to students who encounter a financial need caused by circumstances beyond their control while enrolled as a student.
Eligibility
Emergency tuition support is offered only in serious financial circumstances that are beyond your control. For example:
- Loss of an assistantship or scholarship
- Loss of funding resulting from a death, serious illness, or political upheaval in your home country
You will also need to meet the following criteria:
- Maintain F-1 or J-1 visa status at WSU Pullman
- Be in the last term of your degree program
- Provide evidence that other sources of tuition funding are not available
Students who have previously received an emergency tuition support award from WSU International Programs are not eligible. This award cannot be combined with other International Programs awards.
How to Apply
- Complete the Office of International Programs Awards and Scholarship Application.
- Complete the certification of financial status (pdf) and (if available) provide supporting documents. This can be sent to international@wsu.edu.
- Write a detailed explanation of the unforeseen event that caused the shortfall of funds.
- Provide a brief supporting statement from your academic advisor indicating your academic status and your anticipated time to degree completion.

Eligibility
You will need to submit a WSU general scholarship application to be considered for these awards.
Each area will have its own selection criteria, which may include academic excellence, public service, financial need, or other considerations.

THE AMERICAN-SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION
The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers funding (usually at the graduate level) for Scandinavians to undertake research programs in the United States. Candidates for awards are recommended to the ASF by its cooperating organizations:

- The Icelandic-American Society
- The Norway-America Association
- The Sweden-America Foundation
THE MARGARET MCNAMARA MEMORIAL FUND
The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund awards 6 grants of about $11,000 each year.
P.E.O. INTERNATIONAL PEACE SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR WOMEN
International Peace Scholarship (IPS) is available to women from countries other than the U.S. and Canada pursuing graduate studies.
ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES (OAS) FELLOWSHIPS
OAS offers a number of fellowships to qualified applicants from member states for graduate, undergraduate, and short-term programs.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
The Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship Program currently sponsors scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.
JAPAN STUDENT SERVICES ORGANIZATION (JASSO)
The scholarship loan system provides loans for school expenses to outstanding students who are having difficulty with their studies due to economic reasons.
