Cambridge Master’s Studentships

Every year, the Cambridge Trust grants part-cost scholarships, usually amounting to around £12,000 each, to top applicants looking for one-year postgraduate study.

These scholarships are known as Cambridge Master’s Studentships.

Applicants pursuing master’s degree programs are eligible for these studentships, irrespective of their current mode of tuition payment, provided that:

• They submit their application within the Postgraduate Funding deadline for the program they wish to study, and the university offers them a conditional admission;
• They opt to apply for funding and complete the Cambridge Trust component in the online form as part of their admissions application via the University’s Applicant Portal.

The Studentships are not available to those who have already completed a Master’s or Ph.D. degree or those who are close to doing so.

Financial aid for part-time MSt programs at any University Department is not provided by the Trust.

It’s important to distinguish that MASt courses and MSt courses are not the same (MASt courses are eligible). Selected individuals will be notified via email between March and late July.

Cambridge Opportunity Studentships and Get Into Cambridge Studentships

Cambridge Opportunity Studentships and Get Into Cambridge Studentships target Masters students from low-income backgrounds who have experienced educational disadvantage.




The Opportunity Studentships are set at the Home rate for fees and aim to counter the underrepresentation of students from Black, British Bangladeshi, or British Pakistani backgrounds.

Both studentships are designed to cover living expenses and tuition once the maximum postgraduate grant or loan is accessed through government student aid.

Primary Requirements: No Master’s degree or higher is required from applicants, and they should not be engaged in postgraduate studies at the time of application.

Also, they should be able to answer “yes” to the question: “Do I currently have the financial resources (in the form of savings, assets, other awards, or an income independent of hours worked) to finance the proposed course of study?”

Additional Requirements: In addition to the above fundamental criteria, one or more of the following should be applicable to you.

If there are any unique or challenging circumstances you think should be considered, such as disruption in education due to school transfers or illness, work during full-time undergraduate study, limitations in choosing a university for undergraduate study, unusual route to postgraduate study, or others, kindly provide a description in the relevant section of the admissions application questionnaire.

Applicants may have had experiences such as:

• Being granted refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK;
• Receiving Free School Lunch at the secondary level;
• Residing in a Foyer or being in local authority care;
• Acting as a young carer for a family member;
• Living in one of the country’s poorest areas. This can be confirmed through the government website for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

In terms of university experiences, applicants may have:

• Been a UK government undergraduate student who received a full or partial Maintenance Grant (if you began your undergraduate studies before August 2016);
• Qualified for a means-tested maintenance loan due to a residual household income of £42,620 or less (if you started your undergraduate program after August 2016);
• Been the first in your immediate family to complete a master’s or undergraduate degree;
• Had strained relations with immediate family members or caregivers;
• Taken care of a family member as a full-time undergraduate;
• Been a full-time undergraduate single parent, sole foster parent, or lone guardian of a minor in full-time education;
• Been unable to complete undergraduate studies due to health conditions or the death of a close relative.

The studentship only requires the application for admission to the University of Cambridge, which must be filed by the funding date specific to your program (please refer to the Postgraduate Course Directory).

Certain questions will be included in the admissions application form that you must answer correctly.

The process of awarding the Trust’s scholarship, which lasts from March until the end of July, is ongoing. Most full scholarships are awarded in March.

Partner-funded scholarships may take longer to award, and the Trust occasionally elevates reserve candidates when offers are declined.

About Cambridge Trust Scholarships

The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust were combined to form the Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust on August 1, 2013.

These were established by the University of Cambridge in the 1980s as charitable organizations to provide financial aid to international students undertaking degree programs at Cambridge.

The Trust currently supports between 1,100 and 1,400 international students from 85 countries every year, offering approximately 500 scholarships. Over its forty-year history, the Trust has awarded more than 20,000 scholarships to students worldwide studying at the University of Cambridge.

The Trust continues to offer the highest number of scholarships to overseas students at Cambridge, collaborating with partners worldwide to assist individuals with exceptional academic potential through a variety of scholarship schemes.

Awards are given to selected students at the Ph.D., Master’s, and undergraduate levels across all academic disciplines and all 31 Colleges of the University of Cambridge. These include full-cost and part-cost scholarships.

The Trust is governed by a board of Trustees and managed by a Director, with a team of 13 staff members. The Trust is sponsored by the former Prince of Wales.
