๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Massive Boost in the Canada Student Visa Programme: Everything You Should Understand About the ‘Trusted Institution’ Tag

The Canadian Department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) has unveiled its roadmap to launch the Trusted Institution mechanism for its student visa scheme by 2024.

This mechanism is an integral pillar of an overarching blueprint to revamp the International Student Program (ISP) under the aegis of IRCC.

While finer points are still under wraps, preliminary insights suggest that the core idea is to assess tertiary institutions on stringent benchmarks.

These benchmarks encapsulate their track record in areas like consistent student intake, accurate student identification, compliance adherence and documentation, and guaranteeing a fulfilling and secure journey for overseas students.

Institutions that ace these benchmarks will be christened as Trusted Institutions.

Although the complete gamut of benefits for these institutions is still being defined, the IRCC has dropped hints that these premium institutions might enjoy expedited and simplified application processes for their student applicants.

At present, Canadian academic entities welcoming international students need the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) tag, endorsed by their respective regional governments.

For an international student’s study permit application to Canada, a nod from a DLI in the form of an acceptance letter is mandatory.

This upcoming Trusted Institution model will inherently foster a dual-level hierarchy among Canada’s DLIs, distinguishing between standard DLIs and the elite Trusted Institutions.

This avant-garde Trusted Institution model first saw the light of day during an IRCC conclave in June 2023, with select industry leaders and vested parties in attendance.

The origin of this model can be traced back to the Strategic Immigration Audit and a deep dive into the workings of the ISP.

The audit underscored multiple challenges, not least of which were the susceptibilities faced by foreign students, a surge in applications, and the imperative for a more eclectic mix within the international student body.
