The International Water Management Institute is recruiting to fill multiple internship positions in the following areas:

1.) Internship in Graphic Designing
2.) Internship in Proofreading
3.) Internship in Translation (English to French)

 

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is the implementer of the Water Enabler Compact of the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT-WEC) program funded by the African Development Bank. IWMI intends to recruit an intern to support the development of training modules, extension posters and a catalogue of water solutions.

1.) Internship in Graphic Designing

 

IWMI is seeking applications from enthusiastic students and fresh graduates who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of graphic designing.

Internship focus

Irrigation and agricultural water management solutions provide farmers with the opportunity to cultivate throughout the year and also improve crop and water productivity. However, many agricultural extension agents and smallholder farmers lack information on available irrigation and agricultural water management solutions. In order to make training sessions easier, IWMI, through the TAAT-WEC program, is developing a training manual and extension posters on simple and readily available irrigation and agricultural water management solutions. The focus of this internship is to support students and fresh graduates from tertiary institutions to bring out innovative ideas for the design of the training manual and extension posters. IWMI provides a professional setting that allows interns to gain valuable work experience.

The intern will undertake the following activities under supervision:

  • Assist in brainstorming sessions with technical teams to come up with ideas for the layout.
  • Develop a standard layout, including selection of colors, images and typefaces for a training manual, extension posters and a catalogue of water solutions.
  • Apply the layout to a training manual containing 13 modules, 14 extension posters and a catalogue of water solutions.
  • Together with the team, ensure that the printed version of the layout meets the specified colors and quality standards.




At the end of the internship, the intern will produce:

  • Standard layout for the training manual (including front and back pages), extension posters and a catalogue of water solutions (including front and back pages).
  • Ready for print and online distribution: training manual containing 13 modules in an approved standard layout.
  • Ready for print and online distribution: 14 extension posters in an approved standard layout.
  • Ready for print and online distribution: a catalogue of water solutions for small-scale farmers in an approved standard layout.

Qualifications, exposure, and skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a different field with technical training in graphic design will also be considered.
  • Good knowledge of design software, such as QuarkXPress, InDesign, and photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop.
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the latest trends in the development of training manuals.
  • Efficient approach to time, costs and deadlines.

The duration of the internship is 4 months. This is a nationally recruited internship.

2.) Internship in Proofreading

 

IWMI is seeking applications from enthusiastic students and fresh graduates who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of proofreading.

Internship focus

The focus of this internship is to support students and fresh graduates from tertiary institutions to proofread the training manual and extension posters. IWMI provides a professional setting that allows interns to gain valuable work experience.

The intern will undertake the following activities under supervision:

  • Read and evaluate written text for grammatical and typographical errors.
  • Evaluate the dimensions of page elements such as images, text spacing and positioning to ensure they conform to set specifications.
  • Ensure page numbers are in the right order and not repeated or omitted.
  • Analyze documents to ensure chapter titles match the table of contents.
  • Rephrase written text to ensure document structure and content are consistent.
  • Ensure illustrations are suitably captioned and referenced.
  • Contact authors to clarify grammatical inconsistencies related to style and text choice.
  • Use symbols that are standard and recognized by printing and publishing companies.
  • Compare typeset proofs against original copy to identify errors or omissions.




At the end of the internship, the intern will produce:

  • Ready for print and online distribution: training manual containing 13 modules, which have been proofread and approved for publication (including front and back pages).
  • Ready for print and online distribution: 14 extension posters which have been proofread and approved for publication.
  • Ready for print and online distribution: a catalogue of water solutions for small-scale farmers, which has been proofread and approved for publication (including front and back pages).

Qualifications, exposure, and skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Journalism or a related field.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a different field with technical training in proofreading will also be considered.
  • Good knowledge of word processors and other specialized software to make changes on typeset documents.
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the latest trends in the development of training manuals.
  • Efficient approach to time, costs and deadlines.
  • Teamwork skills: adept at working with authors, editors and typesetters to publish comprehensible write-ups.
  • Spelling/grammar skills: ability to correctly assemble words and apply them in writing.

The duration of the internship is 4 months. This is a nationally recruited internship.

3.) Internship in Translation (English to French)

 

IWMI is seeking applications from enthusiastic students and fresh graduates who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of translating.

Internship focus

However, many agricultural extension agents and smallholder farmers lack information on available irrigation and agricultural water management solutions. In order to make training sessions easier, IWMI, through the TAAT-WEC program, is developing a training manual and extension posters on simple and readily available irrigation and agricultural water management solutions. The focus of this internship is to support students and fresh graduates from tertiary institutions to translate the training manual and extension posters from English to French. IWMI provides a professional setting that allows interns to gain valuable work experience.

The intern will undertake the following activities under supervision:

  • Read through a training manual and extension posters in English, understand the meaning and context of the content, and translate it into French while preserving the original meaning.
  • Consult the technical team to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately.
  • Refer to online translation tools for additional assistance with translations.
  • Use translation memory software, such as Wordfast, memoQ, Across, SDL Trados and Transit NXT, to ensure consistency of translation within documents and help efficiency.
  • Use specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used.
  • Provide support to proofreading and editing the final translated versions.




At the end of the internship, the intern will produce:

  • Ready for print and online distribution: a training manual containing 13 modules translated into French and proofread.
  • Ready for print and online distribution: 14 extension posters translated into French and proofread.
  • Ready for print and online distribution: a catalogue of water solutions translated into French and proofread.

Qualifications, exposure, and skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, French or Translation.
  • Fluency in both English and French.
  • Excellent information technology (IT) skills, especially in using translation software.
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the latest trends in the development of training manuals.
  • An efficient approach to time, costs and deadlines.
  • Teamwork skills: adept at working with authors, editors and typesetters to publish comprehensible write-ups.
  • Spelling/grammar skills: ability to correctly assemble words and apply them in writing.
