The University of Sydney has introduced an exceptional research opportunity for postgraduate students with the 2025 Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Improving Health Outcomes for Individuals with Innate Variations of Sex Characteristics (IVSC).

This prestigious scholarship provides up to $30,000 annually for a duration of up to 3.5 years, supporting a PhD candidate specializing in bioethics or health law within the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

This scholarship enables the selected scholar to contribute to the Interconnect Health Research Project, an innovative initiative designed to enhance healthcare services and support systems for individuals with IVSC.

The scholarship offers a $30,000 annual stipend for the duration of the research period (up to 3.5 years), contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in or have applied to a PhD program at the University of Sydney, with a research focus on advancing physical and mental health for individuals with IVSC through bioethics or health law.

Scholarship Project: Interconnect Health Research

The Interconnect Health Research Project—backed by a multi-institutional consortium led by the University of Sydney and funded by the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care—focuses on developing safer, ethically sound healthcare frameworks for individuals with innate variations of sex characteristics. This project is aligned with human rights principles outlined by the Australian Human Rights Commission, prioritizing the protection and promotion of bodily autonomy and integrity.

Research Focus: Work Package 3

The scholarship will engage the recipient in Work Package 3, aimed at creating bioethical frameworks that support ethically sound, co-designed healthcare models for IVSC individuals. This work complements other key efforts within the project, including:

• Work Package 1: Developing and evaluating clinical and peer-led care models within Canberra Health Services and InterLink’s psychosocial support services.
• Work Package 2: Conducting a national survey to assess health and well-being needs of IVSC individuals.
• Work Package 3: Advancing bioethical frameworks to ensure equitable healthcare access throughout various life stages.
