Theβ€―Department of Stateβ€―Β annuallyβ€―administers theβ€―statutorilyβ€―createdβ€―Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.β€― Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for a class of immigrants known as β€œdiversity immigrants” from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.β€― Forβ€―Fiscal Yearβ€―2024,β€―up toβ€―55,000β€―Diversity Visasβ€―(DVs)β€―will be available.β€―β€―There is no costβ€―to register for the DVβ€―program.




Requirements

  • Applicants who are selected in theβ€―programβ€―(selectees)β€―must meetβ€―simple but strict eligibility requirementsβ€―to qualify for aβ€―DV.β€―β€―The Department of State determinesβ€―selecteesβ€―throughβ€―aβ€―randomized computer drawing.
  • β€―The Department of State distributes diversity visas among six geographic regions,β€―and no single country may receive more thanβ€―sevenβ€―percent of the available DVs in any one year.

For DV-2024,β€―natives ofβ€―the following countries and areas are not eligible to apply,β€―because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years:
Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kongβ€―SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti,β€―Honduras,β€―India, Jamaica, Mexico,β€―Nigeria,β€―Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories,β€―Venezuela,β€―and Vietnam.β€― Natives ofβ€―Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible.

 

Eligibility

 

Requirement #1:β€―β€―Natives ofβ€―countriesβ€―with historically low rates of immigration to the United States may be eligible to enter.

  • If youβ€―are not a native ofβ€―aβ€―countryβ€―with historically low rates of immigration to the United States, there are two other ways youβ€―mightβ€―be able to qualify.
  • Isβ€―your spouseβ€―a native ofβ€―a countryβ€―with historically low rates of immigration to the United States?β€― If yes, you can claim your spouse’s
  • country of birth – provided that you and your spouse areβ€―namedβ€―on the selected entry, areβ€―found eligible andβ€―issuedβ€―diversityβ€―visas, and enter the United Statesβ€―at the same time.
  • Are you a native ofβ€―a countryβ€―that doesβ€―notβ€―have historically low rates of immigration to the United States, butβ€―in whichβ€―neither of your parents was born orβ€―legally residentβ€―at the time of your birth?β€― If yes, you may claimβ€―the country of birth ofβ€―one of your parents if it is a country whose nativesβ€―are eligibleβ€―for the DV-2024 program.

Requirement #2:β€―β€―Eachβ€―DVβ€―applicant must meetβ€―the education/work experience requirement of the DV programβ€―by havingβ€―either:
β€’ at least aβ€―high school education or its equivalent, defined as successful completion of a 12-year course ofβ€―formalβ€―elementary and secondary
education;

OR
β€’ two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupationβ€―that requiresβ€―at least two years of training or experience to
perform.β€― Theβ€―Department of State will use theβ€―U.S. Department of Labor’sβ€―O*Net Onlineβ€―database to determine qualifying work experience.
